Avianca Airlines inaugurates direct flight connecting San Juan, P.R. to Medellin

MIAMI – Travelers from Puerto Rico are now even closer to Medellin, thanks to the new route inaugurated by Avianca Airlines, which connects the skies of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan with José María Córdova International Airport in Medellin.

Avianca has opened service between Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Colombian flag carrier is flying 4x-weekly flights between Medellin’s José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) and San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The exclusive route, with a flight time of around 2 hr. 45 min., wil be operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft configured to carry 180 passengers.

Avianca notes in a statement that it will be offering more 1,400 weekly seats on the route. “This demonstrates the airline’s commitment to providing more travel opportunities for customers in Puerto Rico,” the carrier says.

Aristides Luna, Avianca’s sales manager for North America, adds: “With the inauguration of our direct flight between San Juan and Medellin, we are committed to enhancing Puerto Rico’s international connectivity and offering passengers a direct and convenient option to reach one of Colombia’s most attractive destinations.”

The new route “responds to the increasing demand from passengers who want to travel from Puerto Rico to Colombia.” The carrier already operates 10X-weekly flights between Bogata’s El Dorado International Airport and SJU.

This is the airline’s second direct route in the Puerto Rican market, in addition to the 10 flights it operates to and from Bogotá.

“This fantastic news not only marks the inauguration of a new air route but also commemorates a decade of successful and uninterrupted connection between Puerto Rico and Colombia, representing a 40.6% growth in seat availability now connecting the two countries,” said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia. Let this be an opportunity to invite international travelers to discover the beauty and charm of our six tourist regions.”

“At the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, we are extremely pleased with the historic growth that avianca airlines has demonstrated on the island,” added Carlos Mercado Santiago, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. “It is gratifying to witness the steady increase in the Colombian airline’s presence in Puerto Rico, totaling 14 weekly flights during the peak winter season. The addition of these new four weekly flights from Medellin and the increased frequency of flights from Bogotá will have an estimated economic impact of $45 million and will provide a total of 97,000 available seats between both countries. We are delighted with the excellent tourism exchange relationship that has developed between Colombia and Puerto Rico, which will also foster an expansion of cultural and commercial exchange between these sister destinations.”

Avianca takes pride in connecting travelers with their preferred destinations and is ready to welcome passengers on board for direct flights to Medellin.
