France restricts short-haul flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to cut carbon emissions. The ban, which came into force on May 23, 2023, affects flights between Paris and cities including Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. It is the first such ban in Europe.
The French government says the ban will save an estimated 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. It is part of a broader effort by France to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
