According to one source, three in four Americans plan to take at least one road trip excursion this summer. Most road-trippers intend to travel somewhere within 100 miles of home sweet home. Around one in five plan to travel to a place within 250 miles of their residences, while 5.8% say they could travel north of 1,000 miles of their residences.
Whether planning a road trip this summer or just thinking about it, here are five road trip statistics to consider.
1. People over 60 years old are the least Likely to Road Trip This Summer
According to The Vacationer, Americans older than 60 were the least likely to have plans for road trips this summer. In that demographic, 65.81% say road trips are on the agenda this summer. Meanwhile, those most likely to go on road trips during the summer range from 45 to 60 years old. Nearly 85% of that demographic intend to go on road trips this season.
2. 75% of U.S. adults plan to go on road trips this summer
The Vacationer adds that over 75% of American adults plan to road-trip this summer. That accounts for nearly 196 million people traveling on the roadways and highways. You must be especially careful when you have that many people out and about. All it takes is for one person to make a mistake for on-the-road mayhem to ensue.
Unfortunately, car accidents are a fact of life. But you can still reduce your risks. After all, who wants to get into a fender-bender on what’s supposed to be a fun road trip? The last thing you need is an accident that delays or derails your plans for a road trip. If that happens, you’ll have to report the accident to the authorities, call your insurer, see a doctor, and speak to a personal injury lawyer. Doing all of the above will make the trip memorable for all the wrong reasons.
While many intend to go on relatively short road trips, about 15 million people — or 5.82% — plan to go on epic adventures 1,000+ miles away from home. Whether nearby or far away, your goal on a road trip is to enjoy the drive as much as the destination.
3. Food is the number one road trip essential
According to My Financing USA, the top road trip essential is snacks. Noting that the average person eats at least four times on road trips of five or six hours, the organization notes that half of its survey respondents favor chips or pretzels for snacks. Unsurprisingly, chocolate and candy also make the cut.
4. 20% of people want road trips to incorporate nature
My Financing USA adds that almost one in four respondents — 23.33% — want to be in nature when going on road trips. Living in the concrete jungle that has become city life can take a toll. In addition to experiencing more of what Mother Nature has to offer in natural settings, road-trippers also mention anticipated activities like seeing renowned landmarks, eating at local establishments, exploring local towns, shopping, playing games while going to road trip destinations, and engaging with the locals.
5. A real road trip takes at least five hours
According to one source, respondents to a survey say a road trip is only a road trip if it takes at least five hours of driving.
Whatever form your road trip takes, you’ll want to go someplace fun and enjoy traveling on four wheels. You can make the excursion something memorable.
